Protecting yourself from Spyware

S U R F S A F E L Y O N L I N E

It's the New Year.

Are you ready for the newest possible virus threat?

Instant Messaging may be how the next big worm spreads through the Internet.

Make sure you're doing everything you can to protect yourself.

What is Instant Messaging (IM)?

If you don't already use it,

IM (Instant Messaging) is a popular method for real-time,

two-way communication over the Internet,

both for personal and business usage.

IM use is an increasing supplement to - and

in some cases a replacement for - e-mail.

Popular versions of IM clients are available from companies

like AOL and Yahoo, among others. (Ref: VerizonDSL email to me )

How can IM be a viral threat?

Viruses used to require interaction to invade your computer.

These days, viruses can attack on their own,

exploiting a vulnerability, or hole, in your operating system or

other piece of software. The MS Blaster worm virus, for example,

attacked via a known vulnerability in Microsoft Windows XP.

The more recent Sasser also functioned in a similar manner.

According to McAfee, and Symantec, the next big worm is likely to exploit flaws in IM software.

And it could spread faster than any worm on record. Code Red infected every vulnerable

computer with an Internet connection within 14 hours.

Slammer took only 20 minutes.

An IM worm could spread to a million machines in under a minute.

What can you do to protect yourself?

If you're not already running antivirus software,

now's the time to start.

My personal choice is

McAfee 2005 AntiVirus and McAfee Firewall!

Most antivirus engines have plug-ins for IM clients.

Check to be sure the one you're using does.

Also, check with your IM client to make sure it automatically

installs patches for any known vulnerabilities whenever you open IM.

Most do.

Try to use something other than free IM clients,

a client that uses ecryption and has undergone a rigorous testing process.

In the case of business IM,

companies should do what they can to control

unauthorized use in the workplace.
